Flok Jobs
As part of my college course, I was required to do 315 hours of work experience inside an industry placement. 273 hours of this was done at Flok Jobs, a direct hiring platform specialising in the hospitality sector. In this role I used tools to create detailed page designs, honed my front-end development skills by implementing static web pages, and gained experience in working in a business environment.
Design
I began my placement by collaborating with team members to decide on a colour scheme and create a rough design of the holding page. After deciding on the general look of the website, we began to create more detailed designs for the holding page, and eventually progressed into the design of the final website.
Page designs were created using Canva and Figma, which I was not familiar with before. I am now comfortable with using these tools, and I have also gained valuable experience in collaboration and working in a team.
Implementation
While Flok Jobs offers a mobile app and online dashboard, it was my responsibility to develop the informational, static website, which I implemented using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I chose these languages as they were a focus for my college course, and this placement gave me valuable experience that greatly helped me during coursework and during my exams.
I used Git and GitHub to collaborate on code with other students, utilize version control to view past versions and compare changes, and to assign the development of individual pages to different students. Each page required responsive styling and fluid animations, and the final project had a total of 18 web pages.
Business Environment
One of the most useful parts of my industry placement was the experience of working in a professional business environment. I was given opportunities such as working at the Innovation Centre at De Montfort University and Loughborough University, as well as gaining experience in hybrid working.
The knowledge I gained in HTML, CSS and JavaScript was a big help in my exams, and gave me the ability to create this digital portfolio using just these languages. The skills that I learned, as well as the connections that I made, have made my industry placement an amazing experience that has benefited me greatly.
